"Bad Manager" Video - Smiling

Updated: Sep 28, 2022

My next Good Manager vs. Bad Manager video is live! It’s called Good Manager vs. Bad Manager: Smiling. In this video, you will watch a "Bad Manager" and a “Good Manager” talk to an employee who hasn't been smiling as much as she used to.

Have you ever been told to smile more at work?

Reflecting back on my career, this had happened to me quite a few times, and I personally think I smile plenty. There are many reasons for an employee not to smile at work - they may be listening intently, concentrating, consumed in their work, trying to meet a deadline, troubleshooting an issue. Those things are more important than smiling for someone else. They might just be the type of person who doesn't smile a lot, and that should be ok too. Or they might also be under stress, or unhappy about something personally or professionally, as was the case in this video.

Have you ever been yelled at at work?

I detest yelling and I don't believe it's ever ok to do at work. My employees used to tell me that they could tell when I was upset because I would speak quietly, slowly, and enunciate more. I was so conscious to never yell at them or speak to them disrespectfully, and this is how it came out. Better than yelling!

The outcomes of this video are so starkly contrasted to remind us all that every interaction with an employee is an opportunity to continue building a stronger relationship, to continue building trust, to listen, to learn.

And these opportunities can also result in destroying trust and doing lasting damage.

Which will you choose in your next interaction opportunity?
