Set Healthy Goals - Tip 5

Updated: Sep 28, 2022

For the last tip, I’m walking through a real-life goal of mine and how I used my own tips.

Disclaimer: what is right for me might not be right for you. The purpose of this very abbreviated example is to give you ideas for your own journey.

My 3-month milestone: incorporate weight training into my exercise routine

Feeling I want: strong and physically good

My action plan: weight train 4-5 days/week

So how did it go?

A complete failure!

I did it the first two days and it was just challenging enough, but the third day my legs were so unusually sore even though I had stretched. The next day I was still really sore, so I just got on my elliptical for 30 minutes. Friday, it was just a "no" for me. I did get on my walking pad for about 30 minutes later.

This is how most of us reflect on where we failed. This is the point where most of us give up, if not earlier.

Instead, I reflected on what I was learning.

Was all weight training right for me?

I wanted to incorporate my elliptical and my walking pad.

Maybe I wasn't ready for these workouts.

I would need to pay attention to my body.

Next week’s plan: 5 workouts (3 weight training)

Achievable? Yes, I worked out four times last week. I could stretch to five.

Realistic? Yes, I weight trained twice. I could stretch to three.

I celebrated that despite everything going on, I still found time to exercise four times last week. Did you notice that or did you get caught up in my failure too? I took a moment to feel proud and found confidence for next week’s plan.

In the past, I probably would have given up on day three. I definitely wouldn’t have thought of doing a different exercise; I would have been too busy focusing on my failure.

It's the next week and things are going really well. That learning really helped. That doesn't mean that next week won't be hard. That doesn't mean things will be easy from now on.

Working on your mindset takes practice. I still have to choose myself every day and follow my own tips. It's hard to do on your own.
